Syrian Evening

About the International Arab Film Festival Zurich (IAFFZ)

The politically and confessionally neutral association International Arab Film Festival Zurich (IAFFZ) was founded in 2007 with the idea of placing the Arab film on the German-speaking Swiss cultural calendar. Alternating, it organizes the International Arab Film Festival and their Film Night. Next edition of the International Arab Film Festival will take place in November 2016. This year’s edition of the Film Night has been enhanced to a Film and Literature Evening. The Swiss Arab Network is supporter and sponsor of the Syrian Evening Event, which will take place on the 30th of October in Zurich.

Event Objective

Reading & Film evening

Our Guest is the Syrian Author Fadi Azzam, who currently lives in exile in London. The reading and the film show an unknown side of Syria. The reading and film focus on citizens of As-Suweida province. Azzams novel „Sarmada“ is named by „The New Yorker“ magazine as the most important work done about the Syrian spring. The real existing area „Al Lajat“ is the center of films by the Syrian director Ryad Shayya. In the background he shows scenes from every day life of the Syrian residents, who are trying to overcome their traditions through practicing their own personal passions. The event is exhibited by IAFFZ, which also organizes the Arabic Filmfestival.
